Re: How to structure business partnerships to increase success, fun and reduce strife and breakups
by
Rey Carr
The points you raised about partnership are almost identical to what we've experienced as partners in our business. The eight partnership principles have had a considerable impact on the success of our business and our enjoyment of our work together.
I would add one more key, although it could be an extension of your Key #7; that is, Be prepared to support and encourage the evolution of the each partner's role. Just as a business grows and develops so do the people within it. As partners and over the 26 years we've been in business, our common vision and purpose, our different roles, and the different contributions we made to the business pretty much remained the same.
But as discussion of these points took place on a regular basis sometimes we'd think up new ideas or sometimes our life experiences contributed to having differing perspectives. The ideas and perspectives would lead to making changes such as shifting roles, sharing previously unshared responsibilities, taking on new tasks and such, to ensure that our engagement in the business gave us meaning and fulfilled our vision.
Throughout this evolution, honest and open dialogue became the essential tool. Such evolution can even lead to ending the existing partnership, but with a foundation of years of direct and genuine dialogue, endings can be a celebration of success and achievement.
