I was the most “coach resistant” person on the earth. I could not imagine what a person, who had not met me, did not know my business or industry, and could not possibly understand me, could do to “help” me. As a Make Mine a Million $ Business awardee there were lots of press opportunities, lots of prize things and a huge network of women to begin to learn from. But the one thing that I was sure I would not need was the coaching from The Coach Connection. I spoke with Bill Dueese, agreed to interview three coaches and started down the path, grudgingly. So, I picked a coach. A woman named Marla. Our first series of calls, I spent in tears. So much that I could hardly speak. Grief was overwhelming me, from the loss of my most important cheerleader. With both parents deceased, I no longer had that unconditional parental support that makes you bullet proof. And my coach listened….to the tear drops falling on my desk. And quietly she said, “How can you and I work through this so you feel better today? What is the one thing you want from our session today?” “My cheerleader,” - that was my reply. And that is how we started. That was the beginning of what is now a 2 year relationship with a woman whom I have not met in person. Who did not know me or my business, personal or professional. But who is with every heartbeat of my company, cheering us on, challenging our ideas to fruition, being our wind when our wings need lifting. She has encouraged me, struggled with me, and most of all, just listened to me. Which is what I needed then and still do today. If you are operating a business without a coach, it is like operating without liability insurance. It can be done, but is sure is risky. I now trickle coaching down to my staff. It gives them a sense of knowing where I am going and why I seem to appear giddy with energy after a good coaching session. If you have the opportunity to coach – do not pass it up.
