Brent Bowers wrote an article entitled “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Business” that was published in the NY Times, on July 11, 2007 about some of the advantages mothers had over men in the small business world. He listed several, which were fairly accurate. But he missed a lot more.
Then he made the following claim: “I searched the Internet for evidence for this thesis and found none. The book titles I came across, like “Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office” by Lois P. Frankel, seemed to contradict it. It’s a familiar tune: women leaders need to drop that nurturing nonsense and kick butt the way men do.”
The Internet is full of examples where women, and especially mothers thrive in starting their own businesses because they are women (and mothers). More and more women are awakening to the fact that they have many special advantages in becoming successful business owners because they create their business to suit their own unique, female and motherhood focused way.
In fact, we at The Coach Connection have been explaining the special circumstances of motherhood and the many unique and valuable advantages motherhood provides mothers to become excellent workers and even better business owners for years. We devoted an entire section of our web site to assisting working mothers to succeed. In addition, the Make Mine A Million program has been sponsoring women business owners (many of which are mothers also) to become even more successful at running their businesses since 2005
Brent also asked the following: “I’d love to hear from moms who started businesses in between changing diapers for tips on how they did it and tales of how crazy it got.” Brent, you can read about numerous success stories of women and mothers who have thrived at motherhood, being women and at running very successful businesses all at the same time on both the Coach Connection web site and the Make Mine A Million site. I encourage you to visit both and discover for yourself and possibly your readers how women and mothers have been creating their work lives to suit them and have thrived by doing so.
And more importantly, for any woman and mother who has felt confined in working in a man’s world, take a look at these web sites at what other women have done, and many have done very recently, and realize you can too. There are clear cut patterns for success and some very effective methods you can use to not only virtually assure success, but greatly reduce the unnecessary trials and tribulations (some of which were described by Brent in his article) that many people tell you that you must suffer to succeed.
We welcome any women and mothers to the business ownership world. It can be fun, lucrative, stress free, and life changing when done right. Most women have the common sense and guts to ask for the right help for them personally to do it right the first time. And doing it right the first time means doing it your way, to suit your vision, to suit your passions and priorities, and to suit your values. When women create their own businesses on their own terms they virtually always succeed beyond what they think is possible.
