Today I am posting a question from a prospective client in the “research phase” of hiring a coach and my subsequent response.

Dear Coach Connection,

I am still discussing different coaching options but wanted to know whether it would be possible based on our phone call for you to line me up with three different coaches who are ICF certified?  Let me know what you think.

Thanks!
Steve

Hello Steve,

I appreciate and congratulate you for the effort you are putting into obtaining the right life coach.

You requested to be matched only with ICF certified coaches.  I assume you made this request as a means of weeding out the lesser quality coaches.  We will not accept this request, even though we have a number of ICF certified coaches.  We feel that you would be greatly limiting yourself from being matched with a host of exceptional coaches who are not ICF certified.  We have found that ICF certification does not separate the good coaches from the not so good coaches.  In fact, TCC has terminated four ICF Master Certified Coaches (MCC).  The MCC rating is the highest ranked certification the ICF offers.  These four MCC coaches slipped in during our early days in 2001 and were terminated because they failed to meet TCC coaching and integrity standards.  TCC has also denied membership into TCC to over four dozen other ICF certified coaches because they did not meet our minimum acceptance standards.  Yes, TCC does accept ICF certified coaches, but we do not use ICF or other certifications as a means of separating quality coaches.

In addition, there are over 60 certifications sold to coaches, many of which are ICF based.  You are encouraged to visit the following web page to read an excellent in-depth and honest report on Credentialing of coaches, including ICF's certification program, at A Guide to Coach Credentials.  This report reveals that the two targeted beneficiaries of certification programs are the providers of the certifications who make considerable profits to sell their certifications, and the coaches who purchase the certifications who use them as marketing tools.  This site is also the only place that lists all of the known coaching certifications.

TCC has a very rigorous screening program that all TCC Member Coaches must pass and continue to pass with time.  We have accepted only 159 coaches into Membership out of over 1,350 that have applied.  TCC does not recruit or entice anyone to apply for membership as a TCC Member Coach.  You can view our entire web site and not see anything that encourages a coach to apply to TCC.  Yet, we get over 2 contacts a day, from coaches.

In a nutshell, we have an outstanding group of Member Coaches who have proved over the years that they are excellent coaches by the great successes our clients have achieved by using them.  Our TCC Member Coaches must continually prove that they provide outstanding coaching to our clients.  Otherwise we drop them from our rolls, which we have done for 19 past Member Coaches.  Our focus and motive for coach screening is simple and constant.  We can only accept and keep exceptional coaches, because we risk so much by recommending them to you, OUR client.  There are no games, politics, sale of credentials, etc.  We feel that the quality of the match-ups will be greatly reduced by only accepting ICF certified coaches.

We take all of the risks for the initial cycle of coaching for the minimum of 6 sessions, and we feel that your certification constraints reduce your chances of achieving your coachable goals to a level below our targeted acceptance rate of 96%.  We have seen our TCC clients achieve their initial goals at least 96% of the time using our program.  We do not want to enter into a partnership where your chances of success are so limited and our risks are increased accordingly.

We wish you the very best in your journey.

Warmest regards,

Bill
