The daytime television program called Starting Over has been on the air for about three years now. Starting Over is a scripted, Hollywood, dramatized entertainment TV show. It features women with many different life problems, who have been sequestered in a house under controlled conditions. The show produces good theater and entertaining drama as these women are followed around 24/7 with cameras recording their struggles to overcome their problems.
The show provides at least two people they call “Life Coaches” and at least one consulting psychologist to help these women overcome their problems. The show will also provide other resources including makeup artists, hair stylists, and even Jenny Craig to help these women improve their appearance and lose weight, as part of their path to overcome their problems. more »

The Situation: The life coaching process is only one of the ten human improvement processes available to you to improve any aspect of your life. If you have decided that you want to improve your life is some manner, you will want to figure out how to actually reach your goals. Figuring out how will involve selecting the best-suited human improvement process or processes from the list below to accomplish your objectives. The best suited process or processes for you to use are governed by what your situation is, and by what you want to accomplish. As an example you might consider using the consulting process (hiring a lawyer) or using the self-help process (do it yourself) to solve a legal problem. Another example is to attend a series of training classes, use a personal tutor (teacher), or even use the self-help process to gain the skills and knowledge to design web sites or to play golf.
Here are what I consider to be the ten most popular human improvement processes. I have also provided examples of goals or improvements a person might gain from using each process to give you an idea of the differences and similarities of their purposes. more »

One of the basic cannons of life coaching is that everything that transpires between you and your life coach be kept extremely confidential. Looking around the Internet, you will probably find over a dozen different types of life type coaches listed and promoted. Shoot, we at The Coach Connection list thirteen different types of coaches on our web site alone. All of these coaching choices present a bewildering picture, and we even contribute to your confusion. Goodness, not only is the life coaching process probably new to you, but now it appears that you will have to also figure out which type of coach will be right for you from so many different choices. You might even think you have to pick the right type of coach first. But how can you do this when there are so many choices and no way to understand the differences well enough to make the right choice. Where do you start?

Today I am posting a question from a prospective client in the “research phase” of hiring a coach and my subsequent response.
Dear Coach Connection,
I am still discussing different coaching options but wanted to know whether it would be possible based on our phone call for you to line me up with three different coaches who are ICF certified? Let me know what you think.
Thanks!

The key to achieving your coachable goals with your life coach is that you unravel the mystery of you. You will use your life coach as your personal private mirror to dig down within you to discover your true passions, priorities, beliefs and values, talents and self-imposed obstacles. These make up your inner ingredients that impact virtually all aspects of your life. They are within you. Yet, they are difficult to see, recognize, and understand without the help of another person. Discovering these many important inner aspects about you will depend on how openly you divulge them to your life coach. If you have any reservations about talking with a particular life coach, then you will want to seriously consider selecting another life coach, with whom you have no hesitation.
